William Cotter Maybury papers, 1868-1904

Papers contain correspondence and other papers pertaining chiefly to the accident insurance business and Maybury's other business interests, such as financing the Detroit Light Guard Armory, early activities of Henry Ford and other automotive pioneers, and Masonic activities. Most of the papers are dated after 1893. Also included are proceedings on the "Get Coal" Convention in Washington DC, 1903.

Born in Detroit on November 20, 1848, William C. Maybury graduated from the academic department of the University of Michigan in 1870 and from the law department in 1871. That year he was admitted to the Michigan bar and began to practice law in Detroit. He worked as a city attorney from 1876-1880, lectured on medical jurisprudence at Michigan College of Medicine, Detroit, 1881-1882; and was a member of the U.S. Congress 1883-1887.
